UK/EU Current Research Students

Some Schools in Queen's may have studentships/bursaries available  outside the centrally allocated awards. Students should ensure that they ask their supervisory team and check their School web pages for details of any available School funding.

Funding is available throughout the year for Postgraduate-Led Initiatives. This funding is allocated for training initiatives developed and delivered by postgraduate research students which benefit other research students.

The initiatives can involve organising a conference, research seminar or some other appropriate training activity. They encourage research students to develop their transferable skills through working independently and in teams on activities that benefit other research students. To apply for funding, students must complete an application form outlining the purpose and scope of the initiative and the funding required. The submission must be endorsed by the Head of School.

Sir Robert Hart Scholarship

• Are you a Queen’s Graduate?
• Are you undertaking research or other advanced work of a literary, historical, legal, linguistic, anthropological or sociological nature?
• Would you like an extra £650 (subject to funds)?

If you answered 'YES' to all 3 questions, you could be in line for a Sir Robert Hart Scholarship.

Preference will be given to applicants whose work is connected with the Far East.

This Studentship was established in 2010 by Convocation, Queen's University Belfast to promote the involvement of Convocation in the University and to strengthen ties between the graduate body and Convocation. One studentship, tenable for one year, will be awarded to a maximum value of £2,000 and will normally be awarded annually to one student. The award is not automatically renewable however a student may reapply in consecutive years.

Applicants must be graduates of Queen's University Belfast and eligible to be members of Convocation. Applicants must also already be accepted to study for a postgraduate research qualification (PhD, MSc and MPhil) at Queen's University in any discipline.

The studentship is open to full-time postgraduate students only. The studentship can only be awarded to an applicant not already holding any other form of award for their postgraduate studies.

Applicants must hold a good honours degree (minimum standard 2.1 or above) and should complete an application form which can be found on the Convocation Studentship Page.

The Higginson Leadership Award was founded by a gift in 1954 from Wing-Commander John S Higginson, MA, CBE, OBE, who lived at Ballyward Lodge near Castlewellan in Co Down.  Wing-Commander Higginson was an RAF veteran of the Second World War, whose post-war activities became increasingly philanthropic in nature, focusing in particular on improving services and facilities for the youth of Northern Ireland. Wing-Commander Higginson died in November 2000, but the award has been re-launched by his nephew and heir Andrew Higginson OBE, who has assumed the role of Trustee. Andrew Higginson is Director of Higginson Associates Ltd, London-based Consultants in Conflict Resolution, Disaster Relief and Humanitarian Assistance.

The purpose of the award is to encourage a sense of social responsibility and inspirational leadership among students and alumni of the University, and to support stand alone activities or ventures, rather than extending the students own studies or participation in projects already established by others, which will demonstrate initiative and the ability to inspire or act as a role model for others. Preference will be given to projects or proposals involving developmental or humanitarian aid overseas, in a post-conflict environment.  

Applicants must be enrolled as Queen’s students at the application closing date.

Awards made are normally in the region of £3000.

Students who have received the Higginson Leadership Award in recent years have led teams on projects to build resource centres and help impoverished communities in Romania, Kenya, Bolivia, Thailand, Uganda and Mostar in many interesting and beneficial ways.

This award is normally advertised in November with a closing date for Stage 1 applications in January and Stage 2 applications in March.

If so, you could be in line to receive a Helen Ramsey Turtle Scholarship, which is an award in the region of £2,000.

Please Note: You can still apply for a travel scholarship even if you have not received confirmation that your abstract has been accepted.  Awards will only be paid on production of travel booking confirmation/receipts. All awards are subject to funding availability.

Emily Sarah Montgomery Travel Scholarship 

A number of Emily Sarah Montgomery Travel Scholarships are available for award in 2019-20.  The Scholarships are open to postgraduate students who are enrolled as students for approved courses of study in this University and who intend to travel outside Ireland to undertake a period of research or further education.  The award will be up to a maximum award of £400.  The Emily Sarah Montgomery Travel Scholarships are not tenable with any other travel scholarship or travel grant, including Erasmus.

Sir Thomas Dixon Travel Scholarship 

A number of Sir Thomas Dixon Travel Scholarships are available for award in 2019-20. The Scholarships are open to undergraduate or postgraduate students of Queen’s University intending to travel outside the Britain/Ireland in order to pursue cultural activities abroad.  The award will be up to a maximum award of £600.

The First Trust Travel Scholarship 

This scholarship is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students of Queen’s University in recognition of their outstanding proposal for planned activities outside of Britain and Ireland. The award, of up to £650, may be used to subside travel cost.

The Alan Graham Fund

This scholarship is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students of Queen’s University intending to travel to North America for a period of study or research. The award, of up to £650, may be used to subside travel cost.

The William and Betty MacQuitty Scholarship

Ten William and Betty MacQuitty Scholarships are open to postgraduate students. Applicants must be planning to travel overseas to further their education, and they must explain how their proposed trip demonstrates the principle "travel broadens the mind”. The award, of up to £1,000, may be used to subside travel costs. An additional prize of £300 may also be awarded for the best travel report.

Leverhulme Trust Study Abroad Studentships

The Leverhulme Trust Board, through its Research Awards Advisory Committee, is offering approximately 20 Study Abroad Studentships for a period of advanced study or research (exclusions*) at a centre of learning in any overseas country, with the exception of the USA and UK. Applicants who must hold a degree from a UK Institution need to have been resident in the UK for at least five years at time of application, and should be either currently a student, or have been registered as a student in the last eight years. The scheme offers basic maintenance costs of £21,000 per year, a dependant allowance, and travel costs. Studentships are awarded for between twelve and twenty-four months and must commence between 01 June 2017 and 01 May 2018.

*The following subject areas are excluded: studies of disease, illness and disabilities in humans and animals, or research that is intended to inform clinical practice or the development of medical applications.

These studentships cannot be held at the same time as any other major award or a stipendiary post-doctoral position or fellowship.  UK registered PhD students who are in receipt of a PhD studentship which does not cover the cost of study abroad, may hold the Study Abroad Studentship provided that their existing UK studentship is in abeyance during their period overseas.

James M. Flaherty Program - Flaherty Research Scholarship

Honoring the life and work of Canada’s former Minister for Finance, James M. Flaherty,  the objectives of this program are as follows;

• To build on the network of academic links between Canada and Ireland, resulting in increased academic co-operation, greater inter-cultural understanding and the potential for increased trade between both countries,  
• To support the development of excellence in research of individual scholars who have an expressed and demonstrable commitment to research in a field relating to both Canada & Ireland.

It is the aim of the Foundation to support preeminent scholars and academics who are leaders, or future leaders, in their academic or post-academic professional field, and to this end, awards are made on two levels:

If you are a PhD student or post-doctoral academic in the early stages of your research career, you may be eligible for the Flaherty Research Scholarship. This award supports a short research visit of four to six weeks, and is designed to help scholars make contacts with researchers working in related research topics, with a view to widening and deepening the scholar’s research horizons, ideally leading to continued collaboration in future research.
