Homework Clubs Programme

The Homework Clubs Programme is co-ordinated by SU Volunteer, the Volunteering Department of Queen’s Students’ Union and was founded in 2011.

We currently assist 16 Community/Youth Centres and Schools across Belfast which run weekly homework club sessions, based mainly in areas educational underachievement.  These clubs are supported by Queen’s student volunteers, who provide homework support to children and young people, help them to improve their study skills, build confidence and raise their aspirations about further/higher education.

During 2023/24, SU Volunteer supported 17 partner clubs via 150 student volunteers, supporting 398 children and young people living in areas of educational underachievement.

Two of our partner clubs, Horn of Africa People’s Aid NI and NI Somali Association support children and young people from refugee and asylum-seeker communities.

Horn of Africa People’s Aid NI hold Homework Club sessions from Monday to Thursday at 4.30-6pm. Student volunteers provide homework support to children and young people age 5-16 years in all subjects, particularly Maths and English with a focus on developing language skills.

NI Somali Association also hold Homework Club sessions from Monday to Thursday at 4-6.30pm, where student volunteers provide homework support to children and young people age 5-15 years in a variety of subjects, from primary level to GCSE.

This programme is also a great opportunity for student volunteers to make a positive change in their community, develop their confidence, improve their wellbeing and gain hands-on experience for their personal and professional development.
