A Week in the Life of a First-Year Business Management Student

Being a business management student is extremely fulfilling, action-packed, and fun. My course contains such a variety of modules, so no two days are the same.

A week in my life looks something like this:

Monday

When Queen's was making my timetable, it was as if they knew how much I suffered from the Monday blues. Thankfully, in both semesters, my Monday lecture didn’t start until the afternoon, allowing me to have an extra hour (or two) in bed before getting myself up and ready.

To start my week off on a good foot, I would walk from my accommodation in Elms to Queen's Gym, where I would attempt to get a good workout session in…depending on my mood. After the gym, I head to the Students' Union for some lunch; my favourite is the burrito bowl, it is amazing!

My Monday lectures are on the beautiful main campus, so I usually walk over around 2:50pm to secure a good seat in the lecture hall. My current Monday lecture is Economics, one of my favourite modules on the course so far. It is 2 hours long, so we typically get a break halfway through. However, I find the demand and supply content very interesting, so I never feel the need for any more breaks.

After my lecture, I’m usually hungry again, so I walk back home to Elms to make my dinner. This takes around 15-20 minutes, enough time for me to relax, put music on and get my daily dose of Fleetwood Mac in.

Monday nights are usually quite active in my accommodation flat, so the evening is spent filling each other in on our weekend antics before calling it a night and heading to bed.

Tuesday

Unfortunately, my Tuesday is an early one. I have a dreaded 9am lecture, so I get myself up around 8:15am and hope to be ready in time for class. I have tutorials every 3 weeks, so when it is not a tutorial week, I will go to the McClay library with my course friends and attempt to get as much work done as possible.

Depending on how much work I have, I will then head back to the flat for some chill time. Although my course can be demanding at times, I find it is much easier to balance my assignments when I delegate time for my hobbies. So on a Tuesday evening, I attend an acting class at 7pm.

Wednesday, Thursday & Friday

My Wednesdays and Thursdays are very similar with mid-day classes and tutorials. I thoroughly enjoy these days as I have my favourite lectures: economics and marketing. Most of my classes on Thursdays consist of only an hour, so it is good for keeping my attention in check.

When it is exam and assignment season, I tend to spend a great deal of time in the Treehouse Study room or in the McClay library as this is where I can get some undisturbed study time. However, if I am feeling sociable, I will go to one of the local coffee shops with my friends and do some work there too…it’s all about balance.

I have been blessed in both semesters to be off on a Friday, so I usually spend some quality time with friends on a Thursday evening. It has become a Thursday tradition in my flat to go to Babba or The Points, and I always enjoy spending time with my friends.

On a Friday, depending on how late of a night it was on Thursday, I usually get up and go for some nice brunch with my friends. I then pack up my dirty washing and head home for the weekend. Being off on a Friday has allowed me to drive home before rush hour, so I don’t have to worry about the dreaded Friday traffic, thankfully.

The Weekend

My weekend is more or less the same each week. I will go home on a Friday evening and spend some quality time with my family, filling them in on the gossip from the previous week.

I then work early on a Saturday morning, giving me time to go see my friends from home on the weekend.

I then have an extra-long lie-in on a Sunday before packing up my lovely clean washing and my Tesco groceries and driving back up to my cozy room in Elms.

I love my course and find it extremely interesting and I have been lucky enough to build a strong circle of friends up in Belfast, so having the weekend fly past is usually a good thing, unless I have an assignment due Monday morning, of course!
