Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years. Once known for its turbulent past, it is now celebrated for its vibrant culture, rich history, and stunning landscapes. Some of the most peaceful spots in Belfast and NI offer a serene retreat from the city's energetic pace.
City Hall and Titanic Memorial Garden
The charming City Hall and the Titanic Memorial Garden offer a peaceful respite in the heart of Belfast city centre. Particularly convenient for students living in Elms BT1, BT2, Swanston House, and John Bell, these green spaces contrast with the city's hustle. Whether you sit on the benches or lie down on the grass, the sight of spring flowers and the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze will transport you to a world away from the city's bustle.

The Dome at Victoria Square
The Dome at Victoria Square is a stone's throw away from the city centre. This breathtaking spot offers a 360-degree view of Belfast through a full glass dome. It's a practical escape for city dwellers, offering a unique perspective of the city that never fails to inspire awe.

River Lagan Walk
One of my personal favourites is a tranquil walk from Swanston House around River Lagan, especially at night. The serene sight of the water and the city lights reflected on its surface reminded me of my childhood in Dubai when I grew up by the beach. Benches are conveniently placed along the pedestrian sidewalks, perfect for sitting, unwinding, and losing yourself in the peaceful ambience.

Belfast Cathedral, The Cathedral Church of St. Anne and Writer's Square
The Belfast Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Church of St. Anne, is a place of quiet reflection. I am not religious, but I find solace in such spaces. Right outside this Cathedral is a very underrated spot to unwind at its central staircase. Meditating here as the sun shines through the clouds is a truly calming experience. Additionally, across the cathedral, you'll find the famous Writer's Square, a perfect spot to sit on a bench, read a book, and enjoy some time off.
Belfast Botanic Gardens
As a Queen's student, I am lucky to have direct access to the famous Belfast Botanic Gardens. With its rare plants, tropical environment, and vibrant flowers, this public park offers a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle. The lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere transport you to a different world, making it a perfect spot to relax and unwind.

Cave Hill Country Park
A short 10-minute drive from the city centre will take you to Cave Hill Country Park, home to the stunning Belfast Castle. This serene escape offers breathtaking views and a peaceful atmosphere. If you enjoy hiking, there's a fantastic trail that allows you to reconnect with nature.

Waterworks Park
Another 10-minute drive from the city centre will lead you to the peaceful Waterworks Park. A walk around this park, with its lush greenery surrounding a beautiful lake inhabited by ducks and swans, is a truly relaxing experience.

I still have much to discover peaceful spots around Belfast, but I am forever grateful for these relaxing spots that have provided me with a calm retreat when things get wobbly. Belfast and Northern Ireland have much to offer, and these peaceful spots are just the tip of the iceberg. Whether you're a student, a resident or a visitor, I highly recommend exploring these tranquil spaces and experiencing the peace and serenity they offer.
