Belsonic: The Ultimate Belfast Summer Festival
One of the biggest events every year in Belfast is the Belsonic Festival, where A-List artists come to perform to huge audiences. Medicine student Patrick was lucky enough to see Lizzo and Florence and the Machine this year - read more below!
Day One
First came Lizzo. I love Lizzo’s music and was really looking forward to singing at the top of my voice. I cut a pair of white jeans in half and bought a top on ASOS that met the festival vibe (I hope). I have cowboy boots and a hat from a trip to Nashville last year, so I decided they needed an outing too!
Lizzo had us dancing and singing all night
I went with some of my best friends: Ellie, Victoria and Alex who all looked amazing! We had so much fun, there was a brilliant atmosphere and we bumped into loads of other friends from Queen’s and beyond that we knew, which was really lovely.
One of the highlights of the concert itself was seeing Lizzo on the flute. I only recently found out she was a very talented flutist so to see that in person was spectacular. We had such a great night in Ormeau Park dancing and singing to her biggest songs. I went wild when some of them started. It was definitely a night I’ll remember.
Day Two
The following Wednesday I headed to Florence and the Machine. I’ve loved her music for a long time, so I was really looking forward to it. When I got there with my friend Amyjo, the crowd was starting to build up for what was to be a great night.
We enjoyed Florence and the Machine despite the weather
At these events I always enjoy meeting new people. At Florence and the Machine, we ended up beside people on a trip to Belfast from Scotland, as well as others from across Ireland and the UK. It was great craic and we got really into the music together. The supporting acts were amazing too, Nell Mescal came first (you may know her brother Paul from BBC’s Normal People), then CMAC which was the most eclectic performance I’ve ever seen.
The only downside to going to see Florence and the Machine was that we got soaked. Typical Belfast weather! Luckily we had bought ponchos so the damage was limited and it didn’t spoil an amazing night.
Nell Mescal was a great supporting act
I am so glad I went to Belsonic this year. It seems to get bigger and bigger and attract some of the best names in music. If you go to Queen’s University, make sure to go – you won’t regret it!

Medicine at Queen's
Patrick Doherty (He/Him)4th Year Undergraduate Medical Student | NII'm a 21 year old currently in my second year of studying Medicine here at Queen's University Belfast. I was a school-leaver when I came to university, having went to school in Ballymena beforehand. I'm not sure what I'd like to do when I graduate although the idea of writing or medical education appeals to me. |
