Calling all Rory Gilmore Wannabes: Tips on Getting Involved with The Scoop

Interested in student journalism? Find out how you can get involved in The Scoop, the student-led news platform at Queen's.

The autumnal weather calls for some incessant watching of a comfort series. Gilmore Girls usually comes out on top with its seasonal imagery and September feel. For those unfamiliar with the show, it follows the lives of Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter Rory, an inspiring journalist who idolises Christiane Amanpour. Many episodes revolve around Rory’s experience with writing for her school newspaper. So, in Rory fashion, I urge anyone interested in writing to get involved with The Scoop at Queen’s.

While it isn't a necessary prerequisite to be a Gilmore Girls fanatic, it certainly does help to romanticise the reporter experience. For instance, I have season six in the background as I write this blog. While it doesn't bode well for my attention span, I must admit to having accidentally typed Jess' dialogue into this blog. Thankfully, we have evolved beyond the use of typewriters, eh? In my defence, the episode was showing the iconic "Why did you drop out of Yale?" speech.

What can I write about?

We publish a range of content from science to sport. It is worth exploring the website queensradio.org to see which category fits you best. Or maybe you have an intriguing idea that does not fit into the existing sections. For instance, I hoped to write about local boxing eventualities; however, the existing sports section did not have a writer in this particular area.

Therefore, the head members at The Scoop kindly offered me the opportunity to create a boxing column, which I named “Boxing Unwrapped”. My articles include Q&A-style interviews with professional boxers and recaps of local boxing matches.

You will also be invited to join a social media group that allows you to report on breaking stories occurring around the university campus.

How do I apply?

I have attached the application form below. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to contact me; I will do my best to help!
