Queen’s University Belfast proudly hosted a graduation ceremony in collaboration with R-CITY and Foróige, celebrating the achievements of 32 young people from Belfast’s Ardoyne and Shankill areas who successfully completed the ‘Queen’s University Belfast Level 4 Certificate in Youth Leadership and Community Action’ (30 CATS). Held on October 5, 2024, in the Sir William Whitla Hall, the event was a powerful expression of the university’s Civic Mission, showcasing its commitment to tackling educational inequalities and empowering communities.

The two-year programme was the result of a strong partnership between Foróige, R-CITY, and Queen’s. Foróige developed the programme, equipping young people with vital leadership skills, while R-CITY delivered the modules in creative and engaging ways. Queen’s University accredited the programme, enabling students to earn 30 CATS points, which serve as a foundation for further education and open doors to future opportunities. Throughout the programme, participants developed their critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, empathy, resilience, and leadership skills.

At the ceremony, the graduates were addressed by Dr. Ryan Feeney, Vice-President for Governance and External Affairs at Queen’s, Sean Campbell, CEO of Foróige, and Sarah Jane Waite, Director of R-CITY. All three speakers emphasised the significance of the partnership that made this inaugural graduation possible and the positive impact it had on the students’ lives.

The formal presentation of certificates was carried out by Professor Margaret Topping, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement, and Professor Daniel Muijs, Head of the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work. Olympic athlete Rachel McCann delivered an inspiring address, sharing her journey of perseverance and success, motivating the graduates as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. Following the conferral of their certificates, the graduates celebrated with friends and family at a post-ceremony gathering, reflecting on their experiences, personal growth and enjoyment they had during the programme.

A key highlight of the event was the signing of a formal Service Level Agreement between Queen’s University, R-CITY, and Foróige. This agreement formalises a long-term commitment to the Level 4 Certificate in Youth Leadership and Community Action, ensuring the programme’s continued success and providing a platform for future cohorts to benefit from this life-changing opportunity.

Reflecting on the occasion, Dr. Ryan Feeney remarked:

“This ceremony represents more than just academic achievement – it symbolises the power of community partnership and the transformative effect education can have on young lives.”

Alan Waite of R-CITY added:

“We are proud to stand alongside Queen’s and Foróige to support these young leaders as they create meaningful change in their communities.”

Seán Campbell, CEO of Foróige commented::

One of the graduates summed up the programme’s impact, saying:

“This experience has opened so many doors for me. I never imagined I’d have the chance to study at Queen’s or gain these qualifications. It’s been truly life-changing.”

With this strengthened partnership, Queen’s University, R-CITY, and Foróige are set to continue their work, empowering young people across Belfast to become leaders in their communities and beyond.
