Sir John Gillen carried out a comprehensive review into the handling of serious sexual offences in the criminal justice system. He examined factors which may unduly affect the outcome of sexual offences trials, in particular in relation to the experiences of victims from marginalised communities which research has shown that are particularly vulnerable to sexual abuse. This includes disabled children. The Gillen Review group is considering measures that should be introduced to combat issues that affect the fair outcome of trials, such as rape myths. The group is making proposals for extensive public awareness raising and improved school education campaigns.
