Health Economic Studies & Policy Appraisals
The work strand of health economic studies and policy appraisals that is led by Professor Ciaran O’Neill are integral parts of most studies undertaken by the HS&GHR group such as the assessment of the economic burden of chronic kidney disease, the appraisal of the health care costs of sedentary behaviour and the EU-funded Nephstrom Study of Diabetic Kidney Disease (eg https://nephstrom.eu/). Currently, Professor O’Neill contributes his health economics expertise to a London School of Economics-Lancet Commission about the future of the NHS and its variants across the devolved nations, the Lancet Commission about the care, globally, of people with cystic fibrosis, the National Screening Advisory Committee (https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/c0d9f8-about-the-national-screening-advisory-committee/#membership) and he is one of the academic leaders for the UK’s new EQ-5D-5L value set. Professor O’Neill organises and hosts (with Cornell University and Wisconsin University) a bi-annual Masterclass of international health economics experts that is attended by researchers from around the world.
