Research Profile

Research Interests

My research interests focus on nationalism, nation-building, and state-led mechanisms of mobilization of extraterritorial populations, with Turkey and Russia as primary case studies. Currently, I am developing a concept of extraterritorial nation-building - a model of state-led discursive identity-making that operates within the framework of extraterritoriality. My research project as a research fellow at HAPP is titled "Construction, Engagement, and Mobilization of Extraterritorial Identities: The Role of the Sending State" and aims to illustrate how the Russian nation-discourse, in the form of strategic narratives, is imposed on external populations— Ukrainians in the occupied territories—with the intention of influencing their identities, ensuring their submission to the occupying authorities and legitimization of the Russian regime. The anticipated output of my fellowship is a monograph provisionally titled "Extraterritorial Nation-Building: Mechanisms of Instrumentalization of Transborder Ethnic Ties".
