The Hiroshima Prefectural Products Exhibition Hall was largely destroyed by the atomic blast and its ruins were eventually preserved and used to memorialise the bombing under the name of Atomic Bomb Dome. This talk explores the ways in which the district now occupied by the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, and in particular the Atomic Bomb Dome and its immediate surroundings, have been used in a group of films articulating the memorialisation of the atomic bombing by means of narratives of commemoration and via aesthetics of ruins which have retained the significance of a site of memory as a testimony to war.

Originally from Venice, Maurizio Cinquegrani is a Senior Lecturer in Film at the University of Kent and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Maurizio has written widely about film, memory, history and place and his work includes the monographs Of Empire and the City: Remapping Early British Cinema (2014) and Journey to Poland: Documentary Landscapes of the Holocaust (2018).
