Who We Are

Dr. Maria Angela Ferrario - Director, Centre for Education & Society (CES) Dr. Maria Angela Ferrario directs the Centre for Education & Society (CES) at Queen's University Belfast, bringing expertise in software engineering and human-computer interaction. Her vision for CES is to connect education professionals across disciplines, and to support a research-based computing and engineering education community preparing future generations to tackle global challenges responsibly and sustainably.
As CES director, she focuses on two major "Grand Challenges": Sustainability in Education, and Generative AI in learning and teaching with specific focus on bottom-up approaches to governance. Dr. Ferrario specialises in participatory design methods and investigates how human values shape computing and digital technology's role in environmental and social change.
She served as Marshall McLuhan Senior Fellow in digital sustainability at the University of Toronto, (2017-2019) and led EPSRC-funded research on citizen-led and values-based approaches to technology development at Lancaster University.
