As the Director of CISC, Iain is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the centre, leading its program of activities, and linking the Centre’s work to strategic priorities within both the University and the wider research community. 

His research interests are in the development of new AI and computation techniques for the life sciences and he is particularly known for his work in imaging and spectrometry where his contributions have included: sparsity-preserving image reconstruction techniques; topological methods for single molecule microscopy; compressive algorithms for efficient spectroscopy analysis, and virtual staining with generative AI. 

He has been involved in the capture of more than £25m of external funding including more than £6m as PI. He is a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College, the EPSRC Strategic Advisory Team for Research Infrastructure.
