Welcome to
Queen's International Economic Law Centre (QIEL)

About

The QIEL brings together a diverse and inclusive group of legal scholars bridging a wide span of IEL, including international trade law, international investment law, international dispute resolution, competition law, European Union (EU) law, international finance law, critical approaches to economic law, development and monetary law, International maritime law and international space law. The Centre is interdisciplinary and includes within its membership political economists, political scientist and international relations scholars from across the university working in a variety of international economic policy areas.

This diversity includes scholars from across the world, including many who have originated from the global south, representing many different research perspectives and approaches. Given that the field of IEL is one that is increasingly contested, with countries increasingly challenging the status quo and developing and emerging economies pushing to rewrite the rules of the game, this diversity of voices allows the Centre to reflect and uniquely contribute to the contemporary debates in this space. In this way, the Centre produces research that has global relevance and is truly inclusive.

Our scholars have an outstanding record of academic leadership in their respective research fields leading to high-level publications in peer reviewed journals and in monographs.

The QIEL is also deeply committed to public engagement. Collectively, our scholars have proven track records with a wide range of stakeholders including international organizations, EU institutions, the UK government and the political and official policy-making apparatus in the four nations and the UK overall. This includes the provision of training, confidential advisory work with government, collaboration with civil society partners, outreach activities, and extensive engagement with the media.
