Robert Plane recorded his own ‘shadow’ tracks for this performance of the Boulez Dialogue de l’ombre double, one of the most significant works for solo clarinet and electronics. Boulez dedicated his work to Luciano Berio on his 60th birthday, and Berio’s own large scale work forms an ideal companion piece in this programme. Stravinsky’s classic Three Pieces, from which the whole tradition of works for solo clarinet grows, is a perfect fit to complete this thought-provoking and arresting aural feast.
As well as being known for his performances of English repertoire, Robert Plane relishes taking on challenging repertoire, as demonstrated by two of his current projects: performances of Boulez’s Dialogue de l’ombre double and his forthcoming recording with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra of three rarely heard concertos.
