Congratulations to Dr Bihe Wen who successfully defended his PhD viva June 2024
Many congratulations to Bihe Wen who successfully defended his PhD viva with a creative practice submission entitled "Self as Method: Connection, Transformation, and Innovation in Sound Composition”.
Bihe’s supervisors are Professor Michael Alcorn and Professor Pedro Rebelo and the work was examined by Dr Manuella Blackburn (Keele) and Professor Simon Mawhinney (QUB). The viva was chaired by Professor Ian Woodfield. The portfolio includes works using rare sounds from air-driven sources, AI-generated audio wastes, synthetic techniques creating an organic virtual sounding body, and a piece which features a prepared Chinese guzheng. These compositions reflect Bihe's "self as method" approach, using personal experiences, culture, and memory as nourishment to critically examine challenges and creatively reshape the boundaries between tradition and modernity.
