Geraldine Timlin and Pedro Rebelo's Audio Visual piece Silent Spring screened in Lisbon on 27 May 24
The Audio Visual piece Silent Spring by Geraldine Timlin and Pedro Rebelo is screened on the 27th May in Lisbon as part of the Noise Floor conference at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (ESML).
Silent Spring draws on the philosophy of Buddhism and Deep Ecology, looking in depth at the actual reality of humanity’s relationship within the natural world. The title is a reference to a pivotal piece of writing by the mother of environmentalism, Rachel Carson. In 1964, Carson foretold of a future where we would experience a silent spring, where no birdsong would be heard because ecosystems risked being eradicated as an effect of the human overuse of pesticides.
This short meditative film with immersive sound invites the viewer to share the stillness and flow of the natural world; an invitation to come along and be present. The piece won the Royal Academy of Ulster Wex prize for best video work in 2023.
