Professor Wendy Barclay of Imperial College London receives the Barcroft 2023 Medal
The Queen’s University Belfast School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Science 2023 Barcroft medal was awarded to Professor Wendy Barclay CBE in honour of the outstanding contributions she has made to medical research and virology
Professor Barclay is the head of the Department of Infectious Disease and is the Action Medical Research chair of Virology at Imperial College London.
During her career Prof Barclay has sought to understand the molecular and cellular basis of the pathogenesis, host range restrictions, and transmissibility of influenza viruses. Prof Barclay has also turned her attention to SARS CoV2 and alongside others the consortium G2P2 led by Prof Barclay was recently awarded 25 million pounds from UKRI to track how genetic changes emerging in the virus affect phenotypes, including severity of illness, cell types it can infect, immune evasion, and transmission.
Prof Barclay presented her lecture "Perspective on Pandemics" at 3PM on the 15th November at the MBC LT1. Prof Barclay also generously took the time to meet with academics and students from WWIEM before and after her lecture.
