Geoff Davis
Grade 6 Technician delivering education and research support in the Material Characterisation laboratory.
Geoff joined Queens in 2008 as a Research Technician. He has extensive experience of the concrete and quarrying industries, having worked for a number of years in this sector. He also worked for a period of time in the further Education sector. Geoff's first post within QUB covered all laboratories within School of Planning Architecture and Civil Engineering(SPACE), before the new School of Natural and Built Environment was formed. he provided technical support to students, academics and researchers. in 2011 he moved to manage the Concrete Lab and oversaw all aspects of education and research support, becoming competent in the design of concrete mixes and advising students and academics alike on multiple projects. In 2017 Geoff took on the additional role of managing the Thin Section Lab, this required him to develop his competence in the production of petrographic thin sections and preparation of samples for scanned electron microscopy and analysis of the same. This process is highly technical and requires precision and high degree of patience to produce each sample. In 2018 Geoff changed roles somewhat from the Concrete lab to the management of the Material Characterisation lab, whilst continuing to work within the Thin Section lab. This new role again required Geoff to learn a whole new set of equipment operations and processes, thereby demonstrating his ability to develop and take on additional and ever changing roles. At present he primarily supports education but is regularly requested to support research projects because of his skill set.
