Dr Andrew Newton is Awarded the Lewis Penny Medal 2020
Warm congratulations to Dr Andrew Newton, QUB Geography, who has recently been awarded the Quaternary Research Association's Lewis Penny Medal for 2020. This prestigious medal is awarded to an early career researcher who has made a significant contribution to the Quaternary stratigraphy of the British Isles and its maritime environment. Andrew has employed a range of methods, including seismic reflection surveys, multi-beam bathymetry, borehole data, and ocean-climate modelling to advance our understanding of ancient Quaternary ice-sheets in the North Sea region and in the adjacent Norwegian sea, addressing key questions in relation to ice-sheet palaeogeographies and patterns of development. Andrew’s work shows how the Quaternary record can be used for understanding climate changes of the past and for mitigating climate changes of the future.
