Industry - Mentoring Programme
Mentoring is a great opportunity for students to gain real insight as to what career options are open to them and it is a rewarding experience for industry professionals to help someone progress and achieve their full potential in their future career.
The aim of this programme is to help current School of Biological Sciences students engage with professionals. We want to provide you with a supported framework to think about the career options open to you and help understand the skills developed as well as the skills they need to develop. This is very much personal development opposed to academic guidance or career advice.
How does it work?
We will establish and manage a bank of experienced mentors who will be made available to those seeking help in the following areas:
- Enhancing practical skills and getting advice on career advancement
- Identifying and applying for opportunities that will aid skills development
- Building networks
- Increase career confidence
Students wishing to have support from the mentoring bank will apply and once approved will be allocated a suitable mentor.

- Past Students Feedback
“I had a wonderful experience with my mentor. Frances was so supportive and encouraging. She really listened to everything I had to say and valued my contribution to our meetings. I feel very lucky and grateful to have been paired with her. I would highly recommend this programme after the amazing experience I have had and how much I have gained from this relationship.”
Stephanie McClune, MSc Parasitology and Pathogen Biology, Mentee with Frances Weldon, Almac
“I applied for the programme as I was unsure with what career path to follow, I thought that this programme would give me an insight into the food industry in more depth and potentially show me options that I maybe didn’t know was available. I was keen to get advice from someone working within the food industry to expand my network!
A key benefit of the programme for me was the support my mentor gave me in the run up to an assessment centre. Also, advice of what careers and roles require certain qualifications e.g. bachelors, masters v PhD, as this was something I was trying to decide between.
In addition, through this programme in combination with being a peer mentor Year 2 of my degree, meant that I have successfully achieved my Future Ready award!”

“It was extremely pleasant. I thought it was quite rewarding to be able to give back and to engage with someone still in education looking to get into industry. I hope my mentee also found it rewarding.”
