Our School of Biological Sciences together with our Institute of Global Food Security has a well-established international reputation for our impactful research, designed to help meet global challenges (1st in the UK for Agriculture, Veterinary and Food Sciences REF 2021). We aim to develop solutions to the urgent global challenges that we face today; in the areas of human, animal, plant and environmental health, the sustainable exploitation of living resources, food security and rural development.
Our growing community of international students also benefit from our excellence in education demonstrated by our strong international subject ranking (Top 200 in the world for Life Sciences QS WUR by subject 2023). Recently opened, our new school building, provides world-class facilities for our students.
Our School has five current doctoral training programmes (DTPs)/ Centre for Doctoral Training programmes (CDTs) QUADRAT, Food Biosystems, NorthwestBio, OneZoo and SUSTAIN. These DTPs/CDTs offer prestigious UKRI high-quality funded PhD opportunities that equip students with world-quality skills in biological research. These comprehensive training programmes provide the next generation of scientific leaders with the necessary skills to address global challenges, facilitate enterprise and future economic growth both locally and nationally.

PartnershipsOur School is committed to preparing students with the essential discipline-specific, employability and leadership skills that are required for future graduate success. We offer a range of industrial placement opportunities from 3 months to year-long. These placements foster closer relationships and understanding between students, universities and industry. Industrial placements prepare our students with the essential entrepreneurial skills to equip them to become future leaders.
