Celebrating International Men's Day 2023
To celebrate the International Men’s Day in November 2023, Paul Caplat, SWAN champion for SoBS, formed and led an organisation committee composed by colleagues across the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences.
They organised an event, kindly hosted by SoBS, called “Busting the Myth of the Real Man”, with aim to deconstruct the most harmful stereotypes around masculinity, and to celebrate opportunities for men to acknowledge their vulnerabilities and strength in a positive way.
The program followed as:
Paul Caplat "Boys will be boys, or should they? a tale of masculinity and how to detoxify it, with mind-blowing facts"
Olivia Litter “Raising a young boy as a feminist”
Sean Roe “Not all men, but all women”
Mayuri Sachin Raje “Male gaze, a not so defining feature”
followed by a panel discussion where the four speakers were joined by a former QUB student, rugby captain, and change advocate Oliver Hamilton who told us about consequences of masculine toxicity in team sports, and how to build new values for everyone.
The event was a success, with great attendance by all staff categories and students, and led to Paul Caplat being asked to repeat his talk for the NI Science Fest 2024.
