In late September, Thérèse Murphy was at the United Nations in Geneva delivering a keynote speech on new and emerging technologies, which is an ever-more topical issue in human rights. Thérèse, who is Professor of Law and Director of the Health and Human Rights Unit at Queen’s, argued that legal literacy needs to be seen as an essential companion to its better known counterparts, digital and scientific literacy.

Thérèse was joined on the panel by a range of speakers, including the Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights and law professors from different countries, and the event was sponsored by two UN bodies, as well as Austria, Denmark and the Republic of Korea. Recent LLB graduate, Joelle Houston, who is now working at the global law firm Allen & Overy, was also involved: she assisted Thérèse in preparing the speech.
