QUB research on minority languages in the UK discussed on BBC Radio Ulster
Language policy and Brexit
Prof. Daithí Mac Síthigh's research on language policy was discussed on BBC Radio Ulster's Irish-language programme 'Blas' on 2 October 2019.
Prof. Mac Síthigh, along with Prof. Mícheál Ó Mainnín of the School of Arts, English and Languages, were interviewed about work presented at the recent 'UK Language Policy After Brexit' workshop. Drawing from his published research on language legislation across the UK and on the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages, Daithí emphasised the UK's continuing obligations under international law to fulfill its commitments in respect of Gaelic, Welsh, and Irish, and argued for greater use to be made of comparative research on minority languages within and outwith the UK and Ireland in addressing questions such as the status of the Irish language in Northern Ireland.
