The International and European Law thematic group brings together a diverse and inclusive team working in areas of International law and European law. Our research encompasses a wide variety of areas such as international economic law, international human rights law, European citizenship and health law, business law, environmental law, competition law, financial regulation and intellectual property law.

It provides a platform for facilitating and promoting the research and policy-related activities of members as well as hosting external scholars and policymakers in related fields at Queen’s University Belfast. The thematic group also acts as a focal point for teaching and research on our specialized postgraduate taught degree programme, the LLM International Commercial and Business Law.

The world-leading research carried out by the International and European Law thematic group members is reflected in scholarly publications, externally funded research projects, and a commitment to engaging with local, national, and international institutions. Our members also have a wealth of advisory and consultative experience and a demonstrated commitment to providing objective, technical and evidence driven advice.  

Some of the projects our members have recently been involved include:

Dr Alessandra Guida, Dr Billy Melo Araujo and Dr Regis Simo were recently appointed as members of the UK government’s Trade and Sustainable Development Domestic Advisory Group (TSD DAG).

Dr Pratyush N Upreti published his monograph ‘Intellectual Property Objectives in International Investment Agreements’ with Edward Elgar Publishing.

Dr Clemens Rieder published a chapter on ‘Irish Citizenship Law after Brexit: Implications for Northern Ireland’ in D. Kostakopoulou, & D. Thym (Eds.), EU Citizenship Law and Policy Edward Elgar Publishing
