The EPSRC and SFI Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Photonic Integration and Advanced Data Storage is a vibrant research community bringing together postgraduate researchers and academics from Queen’s University Belfast, the University of Glasgow and the Irish Photonic Integration Centre in Cork. Working closely with industry, our research aims to tackle some of the challenges created by the increasing quantities of data generated by today's society.
Within this CDT, high levels of industrial engagement and sponsorship have helped to create a diverse and vibrant research community, where research projects align closely with industry road maps. Extensive networks lead to plentiful opportunities for placements, nationally and internationally, with students having spent time with partners in Europe and as far afield as Japan. The CDT delivers a cohort-based student experience, where students themselves drive the training agenda, organising annual events, such as a summer “Conclave” (with industry keynote speakers and panels) and a winter school (which draws on the skills and expertise of academics across partner institutions).
Crucially, the CDT fosters peer-to-peer learning and supports networks across the student body (invaluable during the COVID19 pandemic).
Of those who have completed the programme to date, all have gained employment – 4 within the technology sector (Seagate, the National Physical Laboratory and Huawei) and 5 in post-doctoral positions (QUB, Imperial College London and Trinity College Dublin).
