Current research project
Respiratory Motion Management during radiation therapy
Radiotherapy is a key treatment for lung cancer but can result in excessive damage to healthy tissues as the tumor moves during treatment due to patient breathing. At the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre this project will be carried out and will use medical phantoms to simulate a person breathing. By comparing computer simulations of a treatment with measurements of the radiation dose delivered to the phantom, the schemes which can best account for the movement of the tumor in the lung will be studied and optimized.
