EPSRC Grant 'Re-Imagining Engineering Design’ Secured by Collaborative Team Including QUB
A multi-disciplinary team from Queen’s University Belfast, working in partnership with York and Loughborough Universities has been successful in securing a prestigious Programme Grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
‘Re-Imagining Engineering Design’ (RIED) envisages a future where the autonomous design and manufacture of novel, high value complex products is enacted across a distributed, self-organising, self-aware manufacturing enterprise. The fundamental goal of RIED is to Re-Imagine Design Engineering so that new ideas and concepts are generated rapidly, and where both the product and its associated manufacturing system (including its supply chain and people) are designed concurrently and fully tailored to each other. With £7.3M of funding from EPSRC the project has a total value of £11.5m and will involve some forty researchers across the partnership over the next five years.
RIED will be supported by Airbus, Glen Dimplex, ITI, Rolls-Royce, Denroy, SAM UK, MTC, Far UK, OxMet, Bombardier (Spirit Aerosystems) combining the significant research background of the academic institutions with the industrial pedigree of the partner companies.
Well done to all involved!
