The School of Nursing and Midwifery is proud to celebrate International Day of the Midwife (IDM) 2021 and we have planned some exciting events and initiatives to mark this global day of recognition for all midwives!

IDM is celebrated on 5 May each year.  Led by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), this celebration recognises the work of midwives and is celebrated by more than 50 nations and co-ordinated by the ICM in partnership with its member organisations.

The IDM theme for 2021 is "Follow the Data: Invest in Midwives", this celebration joins the global midwifery community to advocate for investment in quality midwifery care around the world which will help to improve sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health. 

This year's theme coincides with the launch of the 2021 State of the World's Midwifery (SoWMy) Report. Co-led by UNFPA, WHO and ICM, the SoWMy 2021 provides an updated evidence base and detailed analysis on the impact of midwives on maternal and newborn health outcomes and the return on investment in midwives. Professor Fran McConville, WHO Midwife Advisor and QUB Honorary Professor will provide us with highlights from the 2021 SoWMY Report via recorded video message which will be launched at the beginning of our planned event on IDM.
