Intellectual Disabilities and Complex Needs

LEVEL OF STUDY - 7 - postgraduate level
The population of children, adults and older people with intellectual disabilities is changing and growing with more living into older age with a range of complex care and support needs. This course will prepare those working in health, social care and independent sector settings to enhance their knowledge and skills in providing best practice care to people with intellectual disabilities.

A postgraduate certificate normally comprises 3 modules, which you can complete in one year as a part time course of study. On successful completion you will be awarded 60 CATs points at Level 7.

Entry Requirements
Applicants shall normally hold a 2:2 honours degree or above, or equivalent qualification acceptable to the university. Applicants with a 3rd class honours degree (or equivalent acceptable to the university) plus level 7 post graduate study will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Course Content
This Postgraduate Certificate comprises three 20 credit modules:
HSN7081 – Advances in Health Evidence and Intellectual Disabilities – Semester 1
HSN7082 – Contemporary Care Delivery in Intellectual Disability Practice – Semester 2
HSN7076 – Evidence Based Practice – Semester 2
This course takes a lifespan approach, considering the health evidence and service provision requirements of people with intellectual disabilities from early age to the end of life stage. Upon completion of this course, applicants will have an advanced understanding of neurodiversity, physical health needs, transitions, behaviour, trauma-informed care, mental health, forensics and offending behaviour and dementia and end of life considerations. This course will challenge applicants to consider how best practice evidence is delivered, considering systems and health promotion theory, leadership styles, interprofessional working and quality improvement.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will graduate with a Post Graduate Certificate (PG Cert) in Intellectual Disabilities and Complex Needs. The course is designed to help students to meet the changing needs of people with learning disabilities and enhance contemporary care delivery. Modules within this course are practice focused and will help students to develop analytical and academic skills.

Delivery
Delivery of the modules within this course will be via blended learning, with a mix of online and face to face classes as detailed within the module timetable on Canvas. Students will also have the option of an online only delivery for distance learners.

Selection Criteria
Applicants must hold at least a degree for entry to Level 7 (postgraduate level) study. Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements should contact the School for advice.
International Trained Nurses/Midwives: If you hold an international qualification you will need to provide a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability. This should be obtained prior to submitting your application. You can apply for a statement through the ENIC website: Statement of Comparability (enic.org.uk)
Students accessing these short courses must work in the relevant clinical area.
