Year 2 Entry Criteria BSc Nursing and Midwifery Programmes
Criteria for application/transfer to Year 2 of BSc Professional Nursing (all fields) and BSc Midwifery
BSc (Hons) Professional Nursing – all fields
Criteria for Application to Year 2 of BSc (Hons) Professional Nursing programmes available at the School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONM), Queen’s University Belfast (QUB)
Applicants may be considered for transfer to Year 2 of the BSc (Hons) Professional Nursing programme (all fields) from another Higher Education Institution (HEI) if the following criteria are met.
- Meet the current 2025 entry criteria to the programme as published on QUB Coursefinder
- Are normally resident in Northern Ireland.
- Have successfully completed Year 1 of a current BSc (Hons) Nursing degree as a component of a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) approved programme, with an overall average of 60% and a mark of 60% or above in half of the 120 credits completed. This should be evidenced with an official transcript provided from your current university.
- Provide evidence of module outlines/syllabus/learning outcomes from your current course e.g., in the form of: Module title, Credits and all Learning Outcomes. This information will enable our academics to review previous learning with a view to assessing if it meets the requirements of the degree programme at QUB.
- Provide a current reference from the Higher Education Institution (HEI) from which you are seeking transfer to confirm you are of good health and sound character (including no current or previous Fitness to Practice (FTP) or Fitness to Study (FTS) concerns).
- Have completed a minimum of 675 practice hours.
- Submit a Recognition of Prior Learning application in relation to Year 1 of the programme completed. This must map to the current Year 1 programme provision in QUB. Further information and the application form can be found on the following link; Procedures for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
- Successfully complete an interview for QUB School of Nursing and Midwifery entry.
Only applicants who have met all the above criteria and have not previously commenced an NMC approved BSc in Nursing programme at QUB will be considered for transfer.
The final number of places available in Year 2 will not be confirmed until after the June Board of Examiners. Following conclusion of the interview process applicants will be ranked in order according to their interview score. Offers will be made in accordance with the number of places available.
Applicants who meet the required criteria will be offered a funded (commissioned) place, applicable to tuition fees. Eligibility for bursary is currently under review by the Department of Health NI. Students on a commissioned place from the Department of Health NI cannot apply for loan funding from Student Finance NI.

BSc (Hons) Midwifery
Criteria for Application to Year 2 of BSc (Hons) Midwifery programme available at the School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONM), Queen’s University Belfast (QUB)
Applicants may apply to transfer to Year 2 of the BSc (Hons) Midwifery programme from another Higher Education Institution (HEI) if the following criteria are met.
- Meet current entry 2025 criteria to the programme please refer to the current QUB Coursefinder.
- Are normally resident in Northern Ireland.
- Have successfully completed Year 1 of a current BSc (Hons) Midwifery degree as a component of a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) approved programme, and with an overall average of 60% and a mark of 60% or above in half of the 120 credits completed. This should be evidenced with an official transcript from the university you are leaving.
- Provide evidence of module outlines/syllabus/learning outcomes from their current course e.g., in the form of: Module title, Credits and all Learning Outcomes. This information will enable our academics to review previous learning with a view to assessing if it meets the requirements of the degree programme at QUB.
- Provide a current reference from the Higher Education Institution (HEI) from which you are seeking transfer to confirm you are of good health and sound character (including no current or previous Fitness to Practice (FTP) or Fitness to Study (FTS) concerns).
- Have completed a minimum of 660 practice hours and have undertaken placements where you have provided antenatal, intranatal and postnatal care.
- Submit a Recognition of Prior Learning application in relation to Year 1of the programme completed. This must map to the current programme provision in QUB. Further information and the application form can be found on the following link; Procedures for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
- Successfully complete an interview for QUB School of Nursing and Midwifery entry.
