Professor Carmel Hughes - Head of School of Pharmacy
I am a pharmacist and Head of School at the School of Pharmacy. Most of my research has focussed on the use of medicines in older people, particularly those living in care homes. My research group is largely female and some of my students and/or post-doctoral fellows are mothers or have caring responsibilities. Therefore, flexibility in working arrangements is really important. I think mentorship is critical at all stages of an academic career, and particularly when starting out. I have been very fortunate to have had great mentors, both within the University, but also from other work settings. It’s good to get a perspective from beyond the University and to see things in a wider context. I strongly believe in the principles of the SWAN initiative, and as Head of School, I am committed to ensuring that all staff can avail of opportunities to develop and thrive in their careers.
