The new versions, performed in a contemporary folk-rock style, introduce Gundermann for the first time to an English-speaking audience.
Dave made this record as part of his AHRC Research Development and Engagement Fellowship on ‘The Political Songs of Gerhard Gundermann in a GDR and International Context’ (2022-24).
The album was produced by Dónal O’Connor between January and October 2023 in Redbox Studios Belfast. It is available on all online outlets and is distributed by the label BuschFunk (Berlin).
Having successfully presented the new songs in Germany in February, Dave will now be launching the CD in Belfast. He will be accompanied by Paul Webster (mandolin), Bronagh Broderick (vocals and fiddle), Nick Scott (bass and vocals) and Stephen Quinn (drums).
Gerhard Gundermann, who died in 1998 at the age of 43, was an acclaimed musician and dramatist who simultaneously worked in a coal mine. His songs, dealing with themes such as the environment, migration, and the conflicts of post-industrial society, are just as relevant today as they were in his own lifetime.
