Why does the position of the trombone’s slide affect the notes the player’s lips can make? Why does over-blowing make the flute, recorder and oboe go up an octave—but not the clarinet? Is there any logic behind the different fingerings for different instruments? What makes wind instruments sound different? Why do reeds vibrate at all?! Dr Trevor Agus is joined by Colin Stark and other wind players from the Ulster Orchestra for some music, demonstrations, and the science behind the sounds. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session and the chance to play some instruments yourself.
