Kate Gould is among the leading British cellists of her generation. For the last 20 years she has been one of a distinguished elite of British instrumentalists at the core of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, working with Abbado and Harnoncourt among others. Away from the COE she is a regular guest principal for the RPO, English Chamber Orchestra and others.

A specialist in chamber music, Kate was for many years cellist of the Leopold String Trio; she is now a member of London Bridge Piano Trio. Along with her sister, the violinist Lucy Gould (Gould Piano Trio), she is also a vigorous promoter of chamber music: Kate has for many years led Winchester Chamber Music Festival, championing the unique intimacy and expressive depth of the great chamber repertoire. With her sister Lucy she also directs the Ironstone Festival, in Oxfordshire, a showcase for chamber repertoire old and new. Kate was invited to Music at Queen’s with London Bridge Trio’s pianist Daniel Tong for an all-Beethoven programme, featuring his great A major Sonata op.69; while we await the opportunity to hear her live, this online chat explores the various strands in her playing life, with video extracts from solo Bach and Mendelssohn’s 2nd Piano Trio.

Biography

Kate Gould is a member of the London Bridge Trio​ ​with Daniel Tong and David Adams. They recently received glowing reviews in the Telegraph, BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone for the first two installments of their ‘Leipzig Circle’ disc series, which comprise the complete trios by the Schumanns and Mendelssohns including those by Clara and Fanny. In February they performed at Martin Randall’s ‘Beethoven at The Castle’ series in Taunton, including performances of two Beethoven Cello Sonatas which Kate played with Martin Roscoe. Before the lockdown, the trio were due to give the London premiere of ‘Hidden Agenda’ by Colin Matthews at the Wigmore Hall, which was commissioned for their festival in Winchester in 2018. They return to Kings Place on 6th December, playing Beethoven Op 1 No 1 and Dvorak Piano Quartet in Eb when they’ll be joined by violist, Gary Pomeroy.

Kate was a member of the​ ​Leopold String Trio​ ​from 1991 to 2008. They gained many schemes and awards from the Royal Philharmonic Society, BBC New Generations Artists, ECHO Rising Stars and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust and sustained a distinguished international career, culminating in their swan song - a live Radio 3 broadcast of the Tippett Triple Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at London’s Barbican Centre. They were Hyperion recording artists and collaborated with many wonderful pianists, recording Schubert, Mozart and Brahms with Paul Lewis and Marc Andre Hamelin.

Since 2007, Kate has been the artistic director of the flourishing Winchester Chamber Music Festival,​ ​at which the London Bridge Trio is resident each year, and she also directs the Ironstone Chamber Music Festival with her sister, Lucy Gould. Kate recently performed at the Aldeburgh Festival and the Peasmarsh, Sacconi Folkstone, Corbridge and Wye Valley chamber music festivals. She is a regular guest at the Festival de los Siete Lagos, Argentina, also giving classes for its course participants. In 2019 she performed in Jack Liebeck’s series at the Laeszhalle, Hamburg, and also in Cologne for an Offenbach theatre project using gut strings.

She has been a member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe since 2000 and often works as guest principal cellist in most of the British chamber and symphony orchestras, as well as ‘Les Siecles’ in Paris and ‘Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique’ on gut strings. Kate has been a professor of cello at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and coached last year on the ‘Cadenza’ summer course. This summer she was due to coach on courses in Bergamo, Italy, and at the Welsh National Youth Orchestra summer course.
