This is a hybrid benefit concert initiated by Juanita Rea (Visiting Scholar - AEL, Founder- eduSOIL, Director - Design For Change Sudan, Arts Council Northern Ireland awardee) with the support of the School of Arts, English and Languages to help people affected by the war in Sudan.
Khartoum was Juanita’s home from 2018 - 2020 and every single person she worked with there has had to flee from their homes. All proceeds received by eduSOIL provide people from Khartoum with funds to evacuate and help them rebuild their lives through mental health support sessions.
There will be live music by Juanita together with Chip Bailey and Paul Kane from the OTH Music Collective. Shiva Badiei, Omid and Omid will perform traditional Iranian music and “Baraye" a protest song which received the 'Best Song For Social Change Award' at the 2023 Grammys.
A range of Sudanese protest art will be shared with personal testimonies from the artists themselves as well as members of the local Sudanese community in Belfast. Come along to sing and drum to Sudanese protest chants and African freedom songs.
QUB students and staff are invited to contribute poetry, music, a song or visual art that is either in response to the conflict in Sudan or relating to issues that have led to it. Please contact Juanita j.rea@qub.ac.uk by 8.00pm Saturday 20th May.
We look forward to seeing you there.
