Bringing together strong expertise in Conflict and Peacebuilding, Cognitive Anthropology, Irish Studies and Ethnomusicology. 

Philosophy

The central aim of philosophy is to understand the world and humanity's place in it, pursuing questions that have been of perennial interest to everyone. 

Politics and International Relations

Approaches ranging from political theory, political economy, conflict studies, and comparative government to the history of international institutions and foreign policy analysis.

Meet our Staff

Research Centres and Institutes

We are home to a number of research centres which bring together clusters of research being conducted by academics in the School and beyond. The Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice exists outside the School, although as many HAPP colleagues are leaders and fellows of the Institute, this enables valuable engagement.

The Centre for Public History provides a lively hub for people engaged in researching, teaching, and practicing public history. We nurture excellent research, provide a forum for debate, and develop working a dialogue between academics, practitioners, and the public.

The Democracy Unit

The Democracy Unit provides a vibrant intellectual space for academics who conduct research on the subject of democracy. We prioritise the practical impact of our research on democracy, engaging with public and policy communities.
Centre for Creative Ethnography
The Centre for Creative Ethnography (CFCE), established by anthropologists and ethnomusicologists at the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics in June 2023, seeks to explore creative practices around the world, investigate creative dimensions of ethnographic work, and contribute to theoretical debates about creativity and improvisation.

A flagship for interdisciplinary research in areas of major societal change.  It brings together researchers from a wide range of disciplines to tackle some of the greatest global problems of our age.

A Pioneering Centre for Interdisciplinary Irish Scholarship and Teaching, established in 1965, as the first such institute of its kind in the world. The Institute of Irish Studies is home for the wide range of research and teaching across multiple disciplines relating to Ireland.

Institute of Cognition and Culture

A burgeoning interdisciplinary field in which scholars seek to explain patterns of cultural stability and variation utilizing theories and methods of the cognitive and evolutionary sciences.
