Professor Olga Demetriou (Durham University) Activism writ small, Ethnography writ large: Research Collaborations on Refugee Protection Failures
The presentation will address the ways in which ethnographic work can inform thinking around activism by considering two questions: the ‘micro’ scale on which such activism may happen and the larger implications it can have; and the fields in which its ethnographic documentation may take place that are not necessarily anthropological. By focusing on the legal case of refugees stranded in the British bases in Cyprus and the artistic documentation of their plight, I want to discuss these two locations of ethnography, the scalar and the disciplinary, in terms of their analytic and methodological import for cross-disciplinary work.
