Dr Katie Mishler (UCD/MOLI) - 'An Irish Urban Gothic?: Theorising Spectral Geographies'
Although the existence of an Irish gothic tradition has been debated, critiqued, and contested, the existence of a specifically Irish tradition of urban gothic writing has been largely omitted from critical considerations. This seminar will employ geospatial analysis to posit the existence of such a tradition set in the capital cities of both colonial Dublin and imperial London throughout the nineteenth century, while demonstrating the limitations and complexities inherent within urban gothic geographies.
Dr Katie Mishler is an IRC Enterprise Partnership Postdoctoral Fellow at the UCD Centre for Cultural Analytics and Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI), where she is Curatorial Assistant and Researcher. She has published widely on Irish gothic literature and is working on a monograph titled Mapping Spectrality in the Irish Urban Gothic: Dublin and London Hauntings.
This event will be held both in person in the Irish Studies Seminar Room and online via MS Teams.
