Dr Robbie Turner, St Andrews, 'The no-go areas in Northern Ireland, 1969-1972'
This is a study of the barricaded areas on both sides in Northern Ireland during 1969-72, where the state was expelled and people took control of their own areas. It's a little studied subject, and this paper looks at how they were run, their internal governance, and how they dealt with everything from transport, issues of law and order, to even bin collections. As well of course as to the impact both political and military that they had on the developing Troubles. They will be placed within a comparative setting, looking at other possible examples from different periods and from around the world.
Robbie Turner recently completed his PhD on the 'no-go areas' of Northern Ireland at the Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence at the University of St Andrews.
This event will be held both in person in the Irish Studies Seminar Room and online via MS Teams.
