Dr Ronit Berger Hobson, QUB, 'When (do?) Leaders Matter - Profiling Gerry Adams'
Leaders influence the way a situation plays out both immediately, but more importantly, over the long-term, when their own perception and behaviour changes. But only some leaders (can and do) change. When they change, usually because of a shifting context or an altered perception of that context, they precipitate a change in the context itself, and in doing so, they affect conflict dynamics.
Utilizing the technique of assessing leadership at a distance (LTA) combined with rhetorical analysis, this paper examines the changes that Gerry Adams, leader of Sinn Féin, the Irish Republican political party and the political wing of the Irish Republican Movement, went through from his election as president of Sinn Féin and until the signing of the Good Friday Agreement. In analysing 119 speeches and 49 interviews Adams gave, the paper portrays Adams leadership style as a pragmatic leader, highly sensitive to the context, while being adamant in holding on to his beliefs and his perceived goals.
