Mariane C. Ferme, UC Berkeley, 'Towards an "icnology" of war: traces of other conflicts amidst the destruction'.

This paper will revisit the ways in which the 1991-2002 war in Sierra Leone was inscribed over the traces of earlier conflicts—which became obvious in targeted patterns of violence and property destruction. The articulation—or palimpsestic layering--of earlier, local conflicts within the broader war was intelligible to those with local knowledge over time, but may not have been apparent to newcomers to the scene, who instead were struck by the purported senselessness and randomness of acts of violence and destruction. Specific cases will be discussed, and methodological and analytical recommendations made for opting for an “icnological” approach, one committed to identifying the telling details or traces.
