Abstract: The international system's anarchical nature is one of IR's fundamental tenets. However, this canonical feature is strongly challenged from a postcolonial and decolonial perspective, as they argue that the international system is a highly hierarchical structure. How has this hierarchical international order been put into place? What are its main characteristics today? How does this structure affect different countries in the system? These are some of the questions this workshop will address.

Abstract: The formal conclusion of decolonization and the rise of Afro-Asian independence processes after World War II did not mean the end of colonial violence. On the contrary, those processes gave birth to – and sometimes even reinforced - forms of violence and exclusion. No wonder this political and intellectual context inspired the emergence of ideas and practices from key postcolonial and decolonial thinkers, which has structured what we call postcolonial and decolonial perspectives. From these ideas and practices, how can we conceive colonial violence and current forms of exclusions? What kind of resistance can we envision to confront a world filled with inequalities and inform political action? These are some of the questions this workshop will address.
Postcolonial and Decolonial Perspectives in International Relations III: Theorizing from the Global South
Thursday 29 April 2021, 6 pm (Belfast) / 2pm (Brasília)
Register via this link Theorizing from the Global South (webinarjam.com)
Panelists: Flavia Guerra (UFRJ), Victor Lage (UFBA), Marcos Costa Lima (UFPE)
Chair: Francine Rossone (QUB)
Presentation of the Roundtable: Aureo Toledo (UFU)
Discussant: Rafael Bittencourt (PUC-Minas)
Abstracts: One of the main contributions from postcolonial and decolonial perspectives is drawing our attention to theories and ideas from the so-called Global South. Instead of providing empirical material for theories develop abroad, for some people, it is time for the Global South to present its own conceptual contributions. However, what does it mean to theorize from the Global South? How does this academic and political project challenge the central theoretical debates in IR? These are some of the questions this workshop will address.
