Dr Kieran Connell

School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy And Politics

Dr Kieran Connell is a historian of twentieth century Britain with expertise in immigration, race, multiculturalism and urban history.  He has published widely in these areas, including his most recent book, Multicultural Britain: A People’s History, which was shortlisted for the 2025 Wolfson History Prize.  He is currently working on a history of Salman Rushdie’s novel The Satanic Verses, and is leading a major new research project examining immigration and diversity on the island of Ireland.

Public outreach & key achievements

  • Dr Connell is a regular commentator in the media, appearing in the Irish Times, The Guardian, The Observer, and elsewhere.  In 2022 he researched, wrote and presented a three-part BBC Sounds podcast on the experiences of asylum seekers in Belfast, The Crisis Files.
