Dr Watkins is a Lecturer in Philosophy in HAPP.  He teaches modules across the philosophy curriculum, including modules in moral philosophy, history of philosophy, and applied ethics.  Over the past ten years, he's developed a philosophy for children project which gives third year students the opportunity to run weekly philosophical inquiries in local primary schools.

The Teaching Awards Panel commented on the Philosophy for Children project:

“This highly distinctive learning experience incorporates a range of collaborative and interactive activities and assessments.   These provide the students with an innovative way to build knowledge of the subject through their preparation and delivery of philosophy inquiries during placement in primary schools.  This work enhances the students’ understanding of the subject, builds confidence and develops important skills for the future.”

“I'm hugely grateful to all the students who've been involved in the Philosophy for Children project over the years: the success of the project is largely down to their enthusiasm, commitment, skill, and philosophical ingenuity.  I'd also like to thank both my colleagues in Queen’s – past and present – and friends from the wider world of philosophy for children: without their advice and inspiration, the project would never have got off the ground.  And last but no means least, I’d like to thank the primary schools who’ve hosted placements and provided such congenial and stimulating environments for philosophy for children.”
