Congratulations to Dr Juneseo Hwang, winner of the PSA 2022-2023 Elizabeth Wiskemann Prize for his dissertation 'The Road Not Taken: 'Triple Transformation' towards Sustainable Peace in Northern Ireland'.
The prize was for 'the outstanding study of (in)equality and social justice and original thesis on achieving sustainable peace in Northern Ireland.
Receiving the award Dr Hwang said:
I especially thank my supervisor John Barry for his wholehearted, endless care. I should also mention that my PhD journey could not be so successful without the university's International PhD Studentship and support from members of The Gathering.
In their statement the judges said:
We were struck by the theoretical sophistication and empirical richness of this thesis, and particularly by the originality of the claim that non-human nature is a forgotten victim of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The thesis compellingly argues that relationships between humans and non-human nature need to be reconciled as part of any sustainable peace initiative and provides detailed examples of how every day, sustainable peace-building between communities has been achieved...As such it is a worthy winner for this prize because it does not only study social justice but also points the way towards it.The thesis compellingly argues that relationships between humans and non-human nature need to be reconciled as part of any sustainable peace initiative and provides detailed examples of how every day, sustainable peace-building between communities has been achieved...As such it is a worthy winner for this prize because it does not only study social justice but also points the way towards it.
