On 25 June, the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics hosted a major international workshop on 'The global Irish Revolution, 1916-1923'. Attracting early career scholars from Australia, Canada, Europe, the United States, Great Britain, and Ireland, the workshop discussed new, transnational approaches to understanding the history and commemoration of the contested period between 1916 Rising and Irish Civil War. 

This workshop is the first in a series of 'global history' events organised by Queen's University Belfast, in collaboration with the Universit‌y of Edinburgh, as part of the AHRC-funded 'A global history of Irish Revolution, 1916-1923' project (2017-2020).

INITIAL CALL FOR PAPERS

Queen’s University Belfast, together with the University of Edinburgh, invites papers from early career scholars for a one day workshop on the theme of ‘The global Irish Revolution’.  The Irish Revolution 1916-23 is the subject of extensive historical investigation but most of this research has focused on local, regional or national contexts and has yet to be the subject of sustained global historical enquiry.

The workshop will explore the global impact of, and influences on, Ireland’s revolution between the Rising and end of the Civil War. What, and where, were the experiences of Irish revolution across transnational Irish diaspora? To what extent was the Irish Question entangled in wider questions about imperialism and colonisation? How did the ‘Wilsonian moment’ and European partitions affect politics in Ireland? Responses to such questions are open from both transnational and comparative perspectives.

Proposals, comprising a 250-word abstract and short biographical note, should be sent to the workshop convenor, Dr. Darragh Gannon (d.gannon@qub.ac.uk) by 1 March 2018. Final papers should be no longer than ten minutes to allow for in-depth roundtable discussion. The one-day workshop will take place at Queen’s University Belfast on 25 June 2018. Travel bursaries may be available to participants who are unable to secure funds elsewhere. This event is organised under the auspices of the AHRC-funded ‘A global history of Irish revolution, 1916-1923’ project (2017-2020), based between Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Edinburgh.
