CHARLES WALLACE FELLOWSHIP IN SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY
Applications for the Charles Wallace Fellowship are invited from Indian social anthropologists or sociologists with proven records of excellence in both research and international publication.
The Charles Wallace Fellowships are funded by the Charles Wallace India Trust and administered in India by the British Council. They are intended for Indian academic or professional social anthropologists or sociologists in their 30s or early 40s who would benefit from a period of study in a British university whilst contributing to the life and work of the host institution. The Fellowship at Queen’s University is tenable for three months (from either 1 February to 30 April or 1 April to 30 June by agreement). As well as pursuing their own studies, using the facilities available at Queen’s University, the Fellow may be asked to participate in seminars or give a few lectures. They may also pay short visits to other UK universities. The Fellow will be expected to submit a short report on their activities to the Trustees towards the end of their visit.
The total value of the Fellowship is approximately £5000 (£4000 contributed by the Charles Wallace Trust and £1000 by Queen’s University Belfast) which will cover national and international travel and a monthly stipend of about £1200. The latter is held by Anthropology on behalf of the Fellow. The Queen’s University of Belfast will assist with finding residential accommodation, and will provide office space and computer facilities.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: There is no application form. Applicants should send an up-to-date curriculum vitae and a letter of application indicating how they would spend the time at Queen’s University. Two samples of published work must also be submitted (but no more than two, please).
Applications for 2024-25 should reach The School of HAPP by 15 October 2024.
Applications should be sent directly to Prof Maruška Svašek m.svasek@qub.ac.uk
SELECTION PROCEDURE: The selection is made by Anthropology in consultation with the Trustees’ representative in London who will write to the successful applicant confirming the terms of the Fellowship. This letter can then be used by the Fellow as official support for a visa application. Otherwise most correspondence takes place between the applicants/Fellow and the Anthropology office.
In order to maximise the benefit gained from the Fellowship, both for the Fellow and for Anthropology, preference may be given to applicants whose research interests fall within the following areas, all of which are specialisms within the School: ethnic conflict, international borders, environmental anthropology, anthropology of performance, anthropology of art, human rights, emotions, and medical anthropology.
