Dr Smyth's research programme is focused on the multi-omic analysis of common complex diseases which are caused by a combination of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors. She has a particular interest in kidney disease.

Her expertise includes epigenetic and transcriptomic techniques used to analyse large datasets with a view to identifying biomarkers.
